Mary Brooking’s expressionistic landscapes interact with the human senses on a primitive level, testing the balance of reality and abstraction within the context of the Maine landscape. Brooking invites the viewer to enter mental and emotional spaces where the speed and immediacy inherent in her preferred medium, acrylic paint, reduce space to intuitively derived forms and colors with a minimum of expressed detail, which nevertheless strongly suggest natural forms. For Mary, there is no right or wrong approach, no ‘getting it’ or ‘not getting it’ about subject matter – there are only layers of thought and time, which may sometimes be beautiful. Mary received her B.A. in Fine Art from Hiram College in 1978, cum laude. She currently resides and teaches acrylic painting in Westbrook, Maine.
